Five Kernels of Corn: A Thanksgiving Tradition

The story is that when the Pilgrims came to America they had their first Thanksgiving in the fall, but grossly overestimated the amount of food they would need to make it through the winter. On top of that another ship came with 35 more people to feed without more provisions. They did not have the proper fishing or hunting equipment and during the winter the game was harder to find. The eventually got down to a daily ration of 5 kernels of corn a piece. The story says that from that time on each harvest they placed 5 kernels of corn on the first coarse plate and took turns giving thanks for 5 things.

It is hard to imagine having to live off of 5 kernels of corn a day. With our land of plenty, and in many times excess, we just cannot grasp what true hunger and struggling to survive can entail. I hope that as we celebrate all that God has provided and done for us you will take a moment to reflect on just how blessed we are. It may not be financially, but we can be thankful for our health, or family, or salvation. The Bible teaches us in Phillipians 4:8 that whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things.

You can add this custom into your Thanksgiving meal. Put 5 kernels of corn at each place setting this Thanksgiving. Each person around the table takes turns holding up a kernel and giving thanks for something. There is also a poem written by Lori Harris:

Twas the year of the famine in Plymouth of old,
The ice and the snow from the thatched roofs had rolled;
Through the warm purple skies steered the geese o'er the seas,
And the woodpecker tapped inthe clocks of the trees;
And the boughs on the slopes to the south winds lay bare,
and dreaming of summer, the buds swelled in the air.
The pale Pilgrims welcomed each reddening morn;
There were left but for rations Five Kernels of Corn.

Fabric flower brooch

I have a green sweater dress the same color as this rosette. It is a short sleeve dress so I pair it with a camel colored turtleneck, some brown leggings and brown shoes. I didn't have any jewelry to match so I made my own. The rosette was a scarf that I didn't like much. I cut a strip 3 inches wide down the length of the scarf. I then folded the length in half. Starting at one end I rolled it and started twisting and rolling until I reached the end. I then tacked it together with a needle and thread and added a brooch backing. I then pulled out my different pearl necklaces and added it to the side. I love it. I thought it turned out very feminine and romantic looking.

Banana Pudding

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
4 eggs, seperated
1 Tbsp butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups milk
box vanilla wafers
5 bananas

In a bowl combine sugar, flour, and salt, set aside. In a small bowl beat 4 egg yolks.
Begin heating double boiler. Add eggs to the boiler. Gradually add flour mixture into the eggs a small portion at a time and stir to incorporate. Alternate small amounts of milk and flour mixture until all in incorporated.

Stir constantly until mixture thickens. Once it begins to thicken add the tablespoon of butter and vanilla extract and stir well.



Put a layer of vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, pudding mixture and continue layering until all ingredients are used. Top with whipped cream or make a meringue with the egg whites and broil to brown.

Target Sale


Target has a great sale this week! Cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soups, green beans, and corn are on sale for $.45 a can. So, I got 75 cans. I got the last three cans of cream of chicken soup and want a lot more, so I will go again later this week- or send some unsuspecting driveable daughter:) I do this every year when I find a good sale on can food- my husband just loves me(eye rolling coming from him in the background.) When I can get it in a case I put it under my bed. But this I had to put in the island cabinets. I love having rows of the same cans all lined up like a grocery shelf. Holly's Grocery.

Thank you veterans!

To all the men and women who have served in the military to keep America the best nation in the world I say a big THANK YOU. The sacrifices you have made and the commitment to serve and protect us are much appreciated. It isn't just the one serving, but the whole family that sacrifices.
My husband served in the Marine Corp during the first Gulf War. Our daughter was 4 months old when he left.

Thrift store finds

I am joining in Thrift Store Thursday to show what items I bought at the thrift store the past couple of weeks. The first is a jacket. I think I am going to shorten the sleeves and sew in the waist a little for a tad more feminine cut. It has an attached brooch and a ruffle hem which are really cute details.
This was the first item I saw when I entered this store. It is in a horrible part of town. I was very pleasantly surprised when I went in. Isn't this so nice and preppy. Imagine a cardigan tied around your neck. Add a monogrammed scrabble tile necklace. Some preppy flip flops.


A set of really cute napkins. The Kohls wrapper was still on them. They were $.50!



A sheet for $1. It has a ruffle edge. Can you see a cute apron? I wouldn't even have to add a ruffle to the bottom. So cute! I could add an orange pocket.




More sheets and fabric for $1 each.



This store had boxes of old patterns. I picked out a few that I would really like to sew some items from. I wanted to frame the covers for my sewing nook, but the price tags won't come off without taking up the print on the pattern. Suggestions?




A Shabby Chic green striped shower curtain. I want it for the fabric, but it is in perfect condition. I about fell out when I moved a piece of fabric and saw the orange leaf of the other fabric. I quickly grabbed it and saw the birdies on it!!!! It was a jackpot piece. Can you not see a little girls twirly skirt made out of it? All the items in the next three photos I got for $3. You get what you can put in the shopping basket for $3. I also bought a black shirt that I used to make a pirate vest. It was the reason for purchasing, so I looked around for anything that I could use the fabric for sewing to add to the basket.

A wool sweater to felt. And the pink one will be great to cut to make stuffed animals. It is cashmere-ish.











Making your days special without money


Southern Hospitality is gathering tips on how we make our days special while in the midst of a tough economy. If you would like to see some of the ideas or add some of your own please visit her blog. I thought I would share some of the things I do to make our ordinary days feel special.






  1. Buy an expensive cut of meat when it is on sale and having a special meal instead of going out to eat and paying a tip and all the other costs. Did you know that beef tenderloin is cut into filet mignon steaks? I just learned that!


  2. Making yummy pies, cakes, cookies, etc. with the kids.


  3. Bringing in nature to decorate. Go on a walk and pick up acorns, pinecones, colored leaves, sticks and add these to tabletop arrangements.


  4. Finding a good book or magazine at a yard sale or thrift store. Definitely under $1 and time for me to just zone out in "me time."


  5. Renting a Red Box movie for $1, popping some popcorn, and cuddling under a warm blanket.


  6. Sewing a patchwork scarf in seasonal colors- here and here. Making a new bag out of scrap materials. I look for sheets and pieces of fabric at thrift stores to use in sewing. You find a lot of great prints and the sheets are so large you have a lot of fabric.

WFMW- No more double creases!

For Works for Me Wednesday I am sharing a new tip I found. My husband wears pants and buttondown shirts to work each day so I iron a lot of clothes each week. I have always hated ironing his pants because they slide around and I would have to be so careful not to get double creases. The problem was I tried ironing the pants legs with them positioned on the ironing board like the photo below so they wiggle back and forth, making it hard to keep the crease stationary while you iron.
Well, being lazy one day I was ironing and the ironing board had stuff on the end. I didn't want to take the time to move the stuff so I just used the space I had free. I positioned the leg on the board like it is in the photo below. Oh my goodness! I have taken 21 and 1/2 years of marriage and ironing to figure this out! The pants didn't wiggle around. I got nice crisp creases. It was so much easier to iron the pants. Now, the job is not as bad as it was, but if you would like to come do my ironing.... just call, okay? I won't object, I promise.

Red beans and rice


I thought I would repost my recipe for Red Beans and Rice. It is so good! First you start a big stock pot with 6 cups chicken broth. If I do not have broth I use bouillon cubes in the water to make the broth. I always keep them on hand. Let this begin to boil while you cook the onions. In a cast iron skillet saute an onion in 1 Tbsp bacon grease. When the onions are cooked add them to the chicken broth in the stock pot. Add 3 bay leaves, 2 pinches Cayenne pepper, and 1 Tbsp minced garlic to the stock pot.

Add an additional Tbsp bacon grease to the skillet and cook 1 lb of cubed smoke sausage. I always use Hillshire Farm. Let the sausage cook until it is browned. With a spatula remove sausage to a bowl and set aside, reserving as much of the grease in the skillet as you can.

Add about 1/2 cup of the liquid from the pot into the skillet and deglaze the pan. Use a spatula to scrape the sides and bottom of the skillet. Add additional broth as needed to have enough liquid to get up all the pan juices. Do NOT skip this step, this is where all your good flavor is! Pour all the liquid into your stock pot. Once the chicken broth comes to a boil add 1 lb of red beans to the pot. I always buy dry beans and soak them the night before. Do not put the sausage in at this point, refrigerate until later.


Let all this come back to a boil, then reduce to low heat and simmer for
1 1/2 hours with the lid on, then 1/2 hour with the lid off. Start your rice cooking in another pot. Remove 3/4 cup of beans from the pot and mash with the back of the spoon against the bowl. Put mashed beans and sausage that you cooked earlier into the pot and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Serve over a bowl of rice.
