Prepared for ministry

We have a family in our home school group that was in need of help this week. The husband is out of the country and the mom was injured and is in bed. They have a 4th grader so needed meals. I love to have food on hand so that I am able to make a meal in times like these for another family on quick notice. I had a roast in the freezer. I thawed it overnight and cooked it in the crockpot making beef strogonoff, rice, crock pot potatoes and carrots, freezer rolls that you thaw and let rise on the counter, and a box of brownies.

Beef Stroganoff
beef tips or roast
can cream of mushroom soup
can Frenchy onion condensed soup
sour cream (optional)

I was using a roast so I let it cook about 2 hours in the soup mixture then took it out and cut it into small pieces. I then put the pieces back into the crock pot and continues to cook it for another 4 hours. If you would like the sour cream stir it in just before serving.
I had another roast I did in another crock pot for my family. I put the carrots and potatoes in it. Sprinkled on a dry package of Lipton onion soup mix and added about 1 cup water to the pot. It makes more of a consumme where the strogonoff makes a thicker gravy.

When I delivered it the mom was in the bed asleep on pain killers. The son let me in to put it on the counter and he apologized for it being messy saying that he had been trying to clean up. It was so cute because with a worn out voice he said that he had stayed up until 1 or 2 AM doing laundry.

Shoes!!!!

My new spring shoes. Megan from Whatever bought these and I thought they were so cute. They were from Payless.

I fell in love with these at Stein Mart. I kept going back to them. The rosettes owned me.

I got these at the thrift store for $1! I probably would have never chosen them in the store but they are so cute on.

My preppy Chaps lovin self came out in these loafers from Payless. So cute. I got them dirty at the ballpark last night.

Hydrangeas

I planted two bushes about 3 weeks ago and they are full of blooms. I love hydrangeas and love being able to bring them in to enjoy.

Painted Cabinet doors

Not finished yet, but I was too excited! We got the lower cabinet doors painted, glazed, and hung. We are still working on the upper ones. But, it is so much better to have the doors on! The one to the right of the stove hasn't been glazed yet so you can see how much the glaze tones down the white color. For two years we have had other things to do and have lived with them open like this. It has driven me crazy!

View from foyer entry.

TThe island that seats six people. I cannot wait to get new countertops. This is horrible. I wipe them and they immediately are messy looking again.

Close up of the doors. They were oak. They also had exposed hinges that were ugly. My husband routed out and added hidden hinges which are so much nicer. We also added the new knobs and pulls.

1 14 oz can Sweeten Condensed milk
2 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts

Cube donuts into a large bowl. Pour remaining ingredients on top of donuts and let soak up the liquid for a few minutes. Stir mixture and let sit to soak as much liquid as possible. Bake at 350 degrees for an hour.

Melt butter and slowly stir in confectioner's sugar. Add rum and heat until bubbly. Pour over each serving of Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.

I have not tried this recipe yet, but plan to make this for our next Sunday School breakfast. It looks so good! Let me know if you try it!

Around the Bloggy World

Oodles and Oodles found this cute apron yardsale shopping. It would be a great way to use up extra squares from quilt making. I have never seen an apron of this design and think it is such a cute and clever use of fabric. A great beginner project!
I just absolutely love all the colors in this string quilt made by Film in the Fridge. So cheery and bright.

Love this wall art created by Domestically Speaking. I have alot of shells and our half bath has a tad of a seashell theme. I didn't want to go overboard, just small touches. This would be perfect for that room.

Check out this bubblegum necklace made by Happy Together. Isn't it so cute!

Couldn't end without some ch0colate from Texas Monkey. She has many other ideas in this post.

Isn't this cool!

(Photo from Facebook Dr Pepper page- member submission without credit) In case you didn't notice it is made out of Coke tabs. For unSouthern people it can be Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Orange or Grape Soda, or any other drink with a pull tab- otherwise known and referred to as Coke by us in the south.

What you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask.

Serenity Now has started a new monthly Dishing It party so bloggers can get to know one another. Be sure to visit to find other great blogs out there and make new friends. This month there are some specific questions to answer so here I go!
  1. How long have you been blogging? I have been blogging for two years now. Unbelievable! Wow, that just seems impossible. I have met so many wonderful people in the past two years.
  2. Why did you start blogging? I started blogging as a way to document our life- a mix between a place to show photos, instead of letting them sit in a folder on the computer, and to show how we live a frugal lifestyle. And, you know, my husband just doesn't want to have to hear all my stories and ideas about sewing and girly stuff so y'all are stuck with me. I can talk away and even if no one is listening I can just keep talking.
  3. Tell me about your blog's title and why you chose it? I chose SouthernSeven because we have seven family members and we are southern. It is sad that southern people are portrayed so many times in movies as backwoods hicks. In reality manners and tradition are very important to southern women. I hope to show more of what it is to live the life of a southern woman as I make my home and raise my children.
  4. What do you blog about? My grocery deals, my thrifted treasures, remodeling our home, crafts and sewing, our family moments, I am learning to garden, recipes and frugal living.
  5. What is your favorite thing about blogging? Definitely the friendships made. I never expected to make real life friends with people off the computer. What a blessing!
  6. What famous person would you pick to be your blog's next devoted reader? I don't get into TV stars so I am going to pick an odd choice... I think I would chose Megan from Whatever because I just think she is so creative and we both have five kids so we have a lot in common and could like tell all our kids to play together while we ate chocolate and crafted or something. She's been featured in a lot of magazines and on like famous blogs so that counts that she's famous, right?
  7. What is the funniest comment you have ever received? I decided when I joined FaceBook that I did not want to include male acquaintances on my account. All the men are related or my kids friends ( I can like spy on them that way.) It is a personal choice I made as a way to keep a protective barrier around my marriage. I had a commentor tell me that it must be nice not to need male friends that they took friends any way they could get them. They went on to say I must lead a sheltered life and pretty much it was goody for me that I had a good husband and wasn't treated like trash. See... funny stuff, right?

So, there you go. All the answers to the burning questions on each of your minds. I have not been blogging too much in the past six months or so because I was pretty sick. I am finally feeling well enough to get back into projects and life. So, welcome to all you newbies, and leave me some funny stuff in the comments so I can have a better response next time. Alright... bye.

Time to Spend

I read this article on The Dollar Stretcher talking about how we can have a dollar today or a dollar tomorrow. Basically, that if we spend our money today we will not have it available tomorrow. If we save it today at some time in the future it will have earned interest and be worth more than a dollar. I totally get the point of the article and agree, but also have thoughts that are not meant to be in disagreement but just points to ponder. Is this always true that our money will be worth more? Our banks are paying a horrible rate of return the last couple of years- way below the cost of inflation. When is it true that the dollar you have today is only worth $.80 in the future because of it's buying power?

We have watched the price of groceries and other products go up at an extraordinary rate. Would it have been better to have spent my money earlier before the rise in price so that my dollar bought more? My thinking the last couple of years has been, yes, to that question. I have made it a part of my quest to build an emergency fund, to have not all of our funds in monies but some of it in food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, medicines. If I can buy at the lowest price and stock up I do not have to spend more buying at full price when we run out and "need" it. It has been two fold- to get the best price, but also to have items on hand. If we should lose our job we have a lot of food to keep us from starving sitting in the pantry and freezer. In a way, I am making an investment in items we use rather that keeping it in the bank to purchase later at a higher price. It is a better use of that money. Now, this is not a good plan if you are buying things you do not need.

What are some ways that spending is saving?
  1. Maintaining our cars and home so we do not have expensive repairs. We pay more for a better tire for our Yukon so it rides smoother. It was about $50 more a tire, but is an investment in what we are driving. We have older vehicles so it is a way to enjoy what we have verses going out and buying something newer.
  2. Buying school supplies, office supplies, gift items, and other stuff when I see it clearanced. I buy backpacks at garage sales for $1 and have a few put away just in case we need them. I buy a lot of notebooks and supplies when they offer it for $.10 right before school starts.
  3. Investing in exercise and healthy foods so we don't get sick. I paid upfront for the gym membership and it is half price from what it would cost if I only paid monthly. I still had to sign a contract for the same amount of time commitment.
  4. Spending money on the garden so we can grow our own food. I have been "investing" in soil each year. I have a compost bin, but am not making enough yet to fill my four raised beds. I bought 8 bags of humus this year to add in with my compost and the soil that is already in the beds. It is money now, but hopefully I will not have to continue this many years. Slowly the Alabama red clay is turning into nice rich soil. I also have heirloom seeds which cost more upfront, but the seeds can be saved and replanted year after year. So, a little investment for the future. Right now it is the $50 tomato, but they are 100% better than store bought tomatoes.
  5. Buying quality clothing that lasts longer. I am not a clothes snob but some brands you just know will wear well and are worth paying a little more for. Osh Kosh for little kids, Levis,Gap, Ann Taylor, Liz Clairborne, Talbots, Dockers, Chaps, etc. I still find all these at garage sales and get great deals on them. My husband has foot pain and has had surgery on both his feet. When he wears regular shoes and tries to work all day his feet are in severe pain. We buy Echo shoes for him to work in. We have paid $120-$180 for them. A lot of money for me to even think about, but it helps him not to be in so much pain and keeps him working and making money.
  6. Buying DVDs instead of paying to go to the movie theater.
  7. Buying a pressure canner, bread machine, crock pot, or other appliance that helps you put up and prepare meals.
  8. I just bought two hydrangeas, a gardenia, and some bedding plants for the yard. Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers. I cannot wait to cut and use the blooms inside! And have you ever smelled a gardenia? Oh my, it is like Heaven. My nose gets all happy. The hydrangeas were $25 each, not cheap, but I hope they bring many years of happiness in their reward. I am going to try to start new bushes off these to fill along the fenceline.

I guess the question to ask is if you spend today is it an investment towards your goals, or is it skimming money from what you are hoping to do in the future? If you are spending today on things that hold no long term value then you will have lost the future value. So, sometimes it is the time to spend so you can gain benefits from your money, it is just a matter of what you spend it on and how you look at it all.

Early garden

Lettuce and broccoli growing in the garden.

I have four 4X8 beds to plant. We just recently put up the chicken wire fence to keep out the rabbits and other critters. When we get a fence up we will put a small picket fence around my raised bed garden. I can't wait to plant the summer vegetables. I have tomatoes, peppers, and squash started. I have also started 10 pots of flower seeds for my front steps.

Easter 2010

It was the first year where no one wanted to dye Easter eggs, or hunt eggs. They are growing too fast. Hope everyone had a beautiful Easter day.
