Sams Club

This is not my cart, but I was full on top and bottom today.

With the arrival of baseball and the need to have meals eaten by 4:45 so we can get to the field I wanted to get items that would be quick to grab when I didn't get supper done. It is expensive to buy food out for all of us, even the hamburgers at the park are $2.50.

Our schools are out the next two week because it looks like we have two cases of Swine Flu in our town. So, I ran to Sams to stock up. I did not save a lot of money, but this is one of those times where it is worth spending a little more to keep my home running more smoothly. I was really shocked when my total was $320.00 though!

I found a box with 6 rolls of Food Saver bags and it was almost $30 and I bought 3 pair of shoes, socks, and kitchen shears and spoons and 3 storage containers for food. Then, I bought the large package of toilet paper, milk, 2 cartons of hot pockets, breakfast sandwiches, waffles, french toast sticks, 100 calorie packs, baseball snacks of Cheeze its and Kool Aid coolers, 10 lb boneless breasts, hamburgers, jello pudding cups... I can't even remember it all. It sure does add up fast. But, now we won't go to the park hungry and buy M&Ms and coke, or stop for another pizza or buy Burger King.

If I am buying the sales with coupons I do a lot better to not shop at Sams. But when time is limited and I need to just get it done Sams is worth the small extra expense. So, are there any areas where you occasionally spend more to have more peace in your life?

I am trying to eat better so I hope to now be able to cook up the chicken breasts and make homemade biscuits and hot pockets and not spend so much again. But, until I can get back into freezer cooking I have some things on hand.

Auto Insurance For Teens

One of the big shocks of life is adding a teen driver to your insurance. We had already added a daughter a couple of years ago so I thought I was prepared when it came time for my son to be added to our policy. Boy, was I wrong. When the insurance agent gave us the amount I think I audibly made a noise. But, I just paid it and adjusted our budget. Big mistake!

Two weeks ago I was checking our online banking account and the insurance company withdrew $550.00 from our account. We were on automatic payment and our bill has been $165- $174 each month. So, I called to see why that amount was taken out. I have not received any notice or bill for that amount. I rounded up all our recent bills and had received a bill for the six month premium amount with a note at the bottom not to pay this bill because we were on automatic payment. Nothing on there about the extra charges. The agent told me that there was some fees for the changes we made. Okay, when we added my son I asked for a quote. She just added him onto my husband's truck which is newer than our Camry. She did that because my daughter is listed on the Camry and they cannot have two teen drivers listed on one vehicle. (Remember, I had asked for a quote, not to be added, like the agent did.) So, I asked if she could move my daughter to the truck and put him on the Camry since she is 18 and cheaper to insure. Also, we had full coverage on the truck and liability only on the car. The agent switched them and told us the amount for coverage and it was really high, so we decided to take the truck to liability only.

So, when I called the agent with questions about the $550 deducted from our account she said part of it was for the normal monthly billing and then there were some fees for the switches we made. Stop it right there, fees? I was never told about any fees, never billed any fees. So, I asked how much the fees were. Are you ready? $315.00!!!!! I exclaimed loudly and said, "Oh my G, I cannot believe you are charging me $315 for fees that you never even told me about!" My son got onto me for using the Lord's name in vain. I argued. I asked why she didn't tell me there would be a fee for switching and she said it is because she didn't know the amount, but there were always fees. I told her with State Farm we never had any fees. I also told her that she needs to let people know there is a fee but she doesn't know the amount so that they know. She became snotty and told me she would go put a sticky note on her computer right then.

In the end, it seems as if there is nothing we can do. One problem is that we had the automatic bill payment and it is taken. My husband didn't want automatic billing and the words "See, this is why."came out of his mouth. If we were paying we would have received a bill, questioned it, refused to pay, changed insurance companies if needed. Now, there is little recourse. After paying this bill, and dropping to liability only on our truck the monthly bill was still $270 a month- $100 over what we paid for full coverage without him added. I called around.

When we bought the house a year ago we were with State Farm. I called to get insurance on the house and it was cheaper to change to Farmers for home and auto insurance. I didn't know that Farmers is not writing their own insurance but piecing together policies from other lesser known companies. They shop for your coverage. Well, they are writing my son with a high risk company just because he is a boy and 16. I called State Farm and got a quote. With all four of us drivers and liability only on the Camry and truck it is $145 a month- from $270 at Farmers. What originally was a better rate turned out to be so much higher and so much riskier.

What am I taking away?
  • It really hurts and makes you feel violated to have money taken from you.
  • Our Farmer's agent was not nice- she was really snotty.
  • Check rated yearly with other companies, don't assume because it was the cheapest last year that you can't get a better rate.
  • Have your kids take drivers ed for the discount. My son couldn't get the class last semester but is in it now and we will get a further discount at the end. He doesn't even have to drive since he has his license already.
  • Tell your kids that they have to have all A's and B's for the discount and if they don't then they will pay their own insurance.
  • Since the two cars only have liability coverage I tell them that if they wreck the car then they will not have it replaced. Nice bike, cool Nikes.
  • If you have newer autos with high insurance it is worth it to buy an older car for a couple of thousand to put the teen driver on for insurance. It also gives your family another car.
  • We are not doing auto bill paying again. All our other bills, except water, is on auto bill pay so I don't know what we are doing with them. But, we are changing insurance and will pay monthly or whatever.
  • The anger at your insurance agent may make you think about using said car to run them over, but you have to let it go and just see what you can learn from the incident. Don't run them over, you will have even higher insurance if you do.
  • Your kids are watching you and how you react. It is okay to stand for your rights, but don't use the Lord's name in vain, and don't call the agent names outloud. Not that I did.

Cleaning out update

I planned to organize the garage yesterday so that I could spend the rest of the week going through each room and have a place in the garage to put everything I plan to sell. I didn't go out there because it was cool and I didn't want to get cold. I shopped and cooked so just didn't ever get to it.

Today, I have gone through my closet, which is the dump place for everything that I want to hide when we have company. Well, I am going to try to sell two evening gowns that don't fit and I have held onto so that when I lose weight I can plan parties with other friends that have evening gowns and want to play dress up. I know, my husband is a Marine and gives me those looks, too. I have also gone through under my bed, my desks, and the entertainment center in my bedroom. I had planned on going through those areas today but then I kept going. I went through the coat closet and found a few that will be too small next year. It is the closet that I store extra food in on the top shelf so Iwent through all the food and checked expiration dates and organized it. I then went through all the medicine above the refrigerator. I have a bunch of Robitussin and Dimetapp that I got paid to buy and some of it expires in July or September so I only kept ones that expire later and am selling the others. I then went through the laundry room. I have extra toiletry items like toothpaste and I had too many cleaning products and am selling some of them. All the cleaning products were free after coupon/ rebates. I am selling any toothpaste that expires before December. I only have about 10 tubes now, and they all expire in December or later.

In a moment I am going to go through magazines. I recieved some trial issues of some that don't really interest me. I am going to look through the others and only keep ones that have a lot of inspiration photos that later I can pull and file. I will have to keep myself from trying to tackle that today or I will find myself spending hours pulling and sorting. Do you find yourself becoming distracted during a project? I have had to train myself to stay focused on one thing. For example, I decide to pick up all the trash, then I will put everything that goes into another room in a basket or box, then I will start organizing and cleaning shelf by shelf. By breaking down the tasks if something comes up I have not created a total mess and can easily have a stopping point. I used to go into a room and make much more of a mess cleaning and then tire about halfway through and be left with a big mess. It made me not want to start a project because I knew I wouldn't have time to finish it. I was all or nothing. It has really helped me to learn to break down the projects.

I have a friend that had knee replacement surgery and is at home getting better. I wanted to make supper for them so some of the things above are for a meal for her. I made Tater tot casserole. If it looks familiar it is Mrs. Duggar's recipe, but I have been making it forever. In fact, Mrs. Bobbie, who I am making it for, gave me the recipe when she made it for me when my 3rd child was born almost 13 years ago. I went ahead and made one for us because my husband loves it and I didn't want to hear him cry alnight. Oh, the french bread, one of the salad mixes and the frozen pie is to take to Mrs. Bobbie.

I had big plans that I couldn't fulfil. I bought 5# of ground chuck and was going to use 3# for the two tater tot casseroles and 2# to make up some hamburgers on the grill and take them a hamburger for tomorrow. I ran out of time. I also have had chicken breasts thawing all day and was going to grill a couple of breasts for them and take a bag of the salad mix so they could make chicken salad. I think I will try to do the chicken and hamburgers and take them by Wednesday before church.

I am slowly getting back to the old me. I cannot tell you all how weird I have felt- totally out of myself.

Make Your Home Sing Monday

This weekend is our neighborhood's big yardsale. I AM NOT READY! EEK! This week I am going to go through each room weeding out things to sell and spend Friday pricing it all. How will this make my home sing? Well, stuff takes up space or time that is draining me. I am going to sell things that I have not used or that are more work that the enjoyment they bring. When we moved in I tried to have a place for everything. We have 800 extra square feet but in one year I have managed to fill every corner and cabinet. I am very visual and things sitting around just really drain me. When a room gets too cluttered it just puts me into a "give up" state until I think I can tackle it completely. I have learned to take one bite at a time and focus on one area. For instance, I will go through all the drawers at this time, then go through the closet next time. My plan for the week:
  • Monday- go though the garage and straighten it so I can bring out everything to sell and have a place to put it.
  • Tuesday- go through my closet, bedroom, and the boys room
  • Wednesday- go through the kitchen
  • Thursday- go through the family room, coat closet and laundry room.
  • Friday- go through the attic and then price it all.
  • Saturday- make lots and lots of moolah. Then box it for KidsMart and donate.

Menu Plan Monday 4/20/09

Tuesday- Hamburger, salad, sweet potato
Wednesday- chicken stir fry

Dressing Modestly

This weekend our church hosted a What Not to Wear seminar with Shari Braendel. I tried to find a photo, but her site doesn't have photos that I could copy. If you ever have a chance to attend or want to have something for the teens and women of your church I highly recommend Shari. She was both entertaining and taught us so much about how to dress modestly while at the same time to be trendy. Shari was in the Miami area teaching corporate and wealthy women how to dress, living in high society, but totally without God in her life. She went to a Bible study to get a client off her back(the lady was persistant) and it changed her life. God used her gifts in sales and knowledge of how to dress to become a ministry to teach women how to dress outwardly, but also to know that God loves us and made us each different and in our own body, and also to be beautiful inside.

On Friday night it was for the teens and their moms. Shari has an ability to share the information on dressing modestly without coming across as an old prude. The girls really listened. We have always required shorts to come to the girl's fingertips and for them to dress without showing cleavage but my 12 year old went shopping and bought some tees that are too tight. I told her she can't wear them and can only use them under other shirts as a layering shirt. She was questioning us. On the way home she told me that I needed to take her shopping to buy some more shirts because she couldn't wear them. YESSSS!!!!

Saturday was for the women. When you walk in they analize your coloring and body type. During the seminar she has all the people in each color group stand and she picks out a "do" and a "don't" and brings them up on stage. She drapes the "don't" with a drape in their color to show how it totally changes the color of their face. She also does this with examples of dressing your body type. Lastly, she showed how for different body types what size purse you should have. It was amazing how the purse you carry makes you look fatter or smaller! The biggest thing I learned... if you are buying ONE purse to use everyday do you know what color it should be? Match it and a basic shoe with the color of your hair. She put different purses with people of different hair color and it is true. It looks so much better if you carry your hair color- now, that is for the basic brown/black/ beige purse and does not mean that you can't carry an orange, green or red purse.

She pulled the group of women that are the bustiest on stage. Every one of them had high necklines that totally covered their cleavage. She used them as an example that if these women could totally cover their cleavage then the rest of us had no excuses. Another big thing I learned was that when you stand sideways your "girls" should be halfway between your shoulder and elbow. If they are lower you are not wearing the proper bra and need to go get a fitting. I've never seen so many women sideways in the mirror in the bathroom in my life!

Shut Simon Up, Can she?

This is Susan Boyle and she was on Britain's Got Talent. The audience laughed at her until she started to sing, then she showed her amazing gift. You have to see it, she is fabulous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

Absense makes y'all just love me more, right?

I have had a few people ask where I am so I thought I would leave a note. I never intended to let it go this long without blogging. I have just needed to take a little time to step back and try to focus on things at home. You know how you look at your life and realize that something has to give. I was just feeling like I was drowning in life and trying too hard to blog when the most important things are to take care of the needs of my family. I have not coupon shopped in over 5 weeks- can you believe it? I made a one time trip to Walmart and have just sent my two teens for pick ups of milk and bread. I really want to sit down and organize my coupons and plan to start again next week. It started when I put all the coupons in my envelopes to go get the sales and then just didn't go to the store. Instead, I ate out of the pantry. This went on for about three weeks and I kept redoing the coupons and then finally just went to Walmart and planned to start again. I understand better how people who say that the couponing is overwhelming because the thought of having to sit down and reorganize it all is overwhelming to me right now.

There is nothing wrong,I guess, except the fact that when I looked up I was not happy with what I was becoming. I used to have supper on the table and the house in order. Supper was becoming what I could throw together and my house felt like it was consuming me. On top of that my kids were becoming lazy in their work watching me be lazy with mine. My main job is a homemaker and that has to be first. So, I plan to start back, but try to limit my time on the computer. I need to schedule posts and spend more time living life. I don't want to be a mom known for sitting on the computer all day. I have missed all the great friends I have made on the computer- my cyber friends. If you have any suggestions about how you balance it all please leave your words of wisdom.

I hope if any of you reading this are spending more time on the computer than you do in the tasks of caring for your home then you will take the time to examine and change that. God has blessed us with our husbands and children and given us the task to feed and clothe them and to make our home run smoothly.

Stocking more than groceries

As a way to save money and be prepared I try to stock my pantry with items when I find a great deal. Shopping the sales with the coupons gets me many items free or nearly free. But, groceries are not the only things to stock up. I have made a mental list of items to look for this garage sale season.

Clothing
  • I want to stock up clothing for the boys a size ahead.
  • Items that are very cheap that I can use for crafting material.
  • Items for the rest of us that fit us now or can be tailored to fit.
  • I plan to spend an extra $5 a week purchasing items solely for the purpose of reselling at the Kids Mart or consignment store.
  • I want to pay for all the youngest three children's clothing with money made from reselling clothes on consignment.

Toiletries and Medicine:

  • Have one year supply of toiletries and medicine.
  • I get most of these items from CVS and Walgreen rebates or couponing.
  • My husband takes a prescription blood pressure medicine, so I am working to get one month ahead with that medication.

Craft, School , and Office Supplies:

  • Buy all the items I see that can be used in our school and crafting.
  • Buy unusual containers and baskets for gifting.
  • Platters and tins for baked gift items.
  • Look for unusual items to use in giftwrapping like keys, maps, broaches.
  • Operation Christmas Child Box toys and school or craft supplies
  • New items for Dirty Santa or kid's birthday parties

Household:

  • Tupperware, bakeware, etc.
  • Jars for canning and gift giving mixes in a jar.
  • Holiday decor items
  • Decortions
  • Themed party items
  • Linens for the beds and tables
  • Frames to paint
  • plates to mix into my dishes
  • candles/lanterns/oil lamps-( can be used in power outages. )
  • Books and magazines
  • Pots for gardening
  • Games/ DVDs
  • Chandalier for the kitchen- to paint

It helps me to have a goal or focus of items I need so that I don't overbuy. I really need to complete many projects before bringing in anymore items that need paint or work to fit into our home.

My new baking crock

I found this baking crock at the thrift store yesterday. I was so excited to use it that I had to make chicken pot pie for supper. I love it. It is so pretty to make dishes for company.
