Dressing Modestly

This weekend our church hosted a What Not to Wear seminar with Shari Braendel. I tried to find a photo, but her site doesn't have photos that I could copy. If you ever have a chance to attend or want to have something for the teens and women of your church I highly recommend Shari. She was both entertaining and taught us so much about how to dress modestly while at the same time to be trendy. Shari was in the Miami area teaching corporate and wealthy women how to dress, living in high society, but totally without God in her life. She went to a Bible study to get a client off her back(the lady was persistant) and it changed her life. God used her gifts in sales and knowledge of how to dress to become a ministry to teach women how to dress outwardly, but also to know that God loves us and made us each different and in our own body, and also to be beautiful inside.

On Friday night it was for the teens and their moms. Shari has an ability to share the information on dressing modestly without coming across as an old prude. The girls really listened. We have always required shorts to come to the girl's fingertips and for them to dress without showing cleavage but my 12 year old went shopping and bought some tees that are too tight. I told her she can't wear them and can only use them under other shirts as a layering shirt. She was questioning us. On the way home she told me that I needed to take her shopping to buy some more shirts because she couldn't wear them. YESSSS!!!!

Saturday was for the women. When you walk in they analize your coloring and body type. During the seminar she has all the people in each color group stand and she picks out a "do" and a "don't" and brings them up on stage. She drapes the "don't" with a drape in their color to show how it totally changes the color of their face. She also does this with examples of dressing your body type. Lastly, she showed how for different body types what size purse you should have. It was amazing how the purse you carry makes you look fatter or smaller! The biggest thing I learned... if you are buying ONE purse to use everyday do you know what color it should be? Match it and a basic shoe with the color of your hair. She put different purses with people of different hair color and it is true. It looks so much better if you carry your hair color- now, that is for the basic brown/black/ beige purse and does not mean that you can't carry an orange, green or red purse.

She pulled the group of women that are the bustiest on stage. Every one of them had high necklines that totally covered their cleavage. She used them as an example that if these women could totally cover their cleavage then the rest of us had no excuses. Another big thing I learned was that when you stand sideways your "girls" should be halfway between your shoulder and elbow. If they are lower you are not wearing the proper bra and need to go get a fitting. I've never seen so many women sideways in the mirror in the bathroom in my life!

Oooh, I would love to have gone there for this. How fun!

Now I'm off to stand sideways in front of the mirror!

Okay, this was interesting. I want to know what she suggested for the women with extra baggage - share the tips! I have never thought about matching my purse with my hair. Guess I have to go buy a new purse now! :)

Rochelle- she really recommended the Spanx things for like $85. She said it is cheaper than surgery:) But, also that Target has a line and it is made by the lady that invented the SPANX but just not made with the fibers of spanx so not quite as pully inney. Did you mean overall baggage or the "girls"?

Where do you gain weight first? It is different for each shape.

That sounds interesting. What is her website? I'd like to go check her out and see if she is going to be around here somewhere.

haha, I didn't mean the "girls" - haha, but you have me laughing. I am probably closer to apple shape, tend to gain weight in the middle - stomach, butt, hips, thighs. Combination of family history and genetics, PCOS, 12 years of fertility treatments, not enough exercise, etc. I will check out her website. Thanks! :)

Rochelle- an apple doesn't usually have trouble with their legs and hips, but there are combination people that were both an "O" her apple, and an "A" her pear. For an A our shoulders and upper body are small, we have little waists compared to our hips.We need to balance out our upper body- use shoulder pads and color to draw your eye up. We never let our tops stop at the largest part of our hips. We are to create a column by wearing the same color pants and jacket with color in the top. For the people with a belly they NEVER want to wear a belt or things that cinch at the waist. I can't remember all their tricks since I was not in that catagory. You would be in the catagory to carry a medium sized purse. something in the range of a foot to 18 inches wide. The really tall people can carry the pieces of luggage purses. My book has disappeared - 12 year old - so this is all from memory. I will tell you more if I see something in the book.
